These two little works are I think the last I will manage to do before the exhibition. I am so happy with them. I hope I feel the same tomorrow.

Girl Print reminds me of the cotton print dresses my mother made for me when I was little and how small things were such a delight. My sister Susan tells me the painting reminds her of the Hibiscus that grew in our garden. She is right, I hadn’t seen it before.

Opening Out

John Reilly sj says that like a rose, a growing life unfolds and expands becoming larger, more open and more free.
This small painting is an expression of that opening.

The lace is a visual metaphor for everyday human life and experience, both glorious and humble.

My studio is looking very untidy at the moment as I focus more on the final work. I take heart when I think of the photos of studios of great artists. I listen to classical music as I lose myself in the painting.

I love that your lace perfectly echoes the rose form. This has to be one of my favourites from your paintings Kerry. I love both the cool and warm reds and the spiralling in and out.

Rose Interior

oil on linen 45x45cms $700AUS

A nostalgic painting that relates to my fondness for an Aunt and the love of blue and white china that she passed on to me. The roses were a gift but their ephemeral quality hints at life’s briefness and the empty box how little we are left with at the end. Thinking about the still life of early Dutch paintings and the meaning placed on objects in a painting-memento mori. Meant to be a joyful painting but also reflective about life and its passing.

Chair and Lace

oil on linen 35x30cms $550AUS

Continuing the chair and red and white theme…took 2 images of chairs I’d seen in the V & A Museum and patterned them with panels of lace that I had actually referenced for you on a trip overseas. Intrigued by the intertwining of warm against cool areas and detail against flat areas.Liked that there was just a hint of shadow to lift them off the surface.

Jen, It is stunning! I like the simplicity of it and the colours.
I have three paintings to add tomorrow. I stayed with my aunt over the weekend and asked her if she had the crochet lace place-mats I had seen my grandmother make for her when I was a young girl. She did and she showed me one. I was surprised at the pattern- different to what I remembered. I took a photo and found when I returned home that I already had a piece of lace with a similar pattern. Mine was picked up from an opportunity shop. So I have included the pattern in my next three paintings. They are an expression of mystery, moments of new life and, if you look closely, have a reference to your tulips.

I have decided to paint up  in the house rather than in the studio and that has been helpful. I have been able to use shapes and colours of the things around. This is an Easter painting I think. I was inspired by my mother’s passionfruit plate.

Wedding Dress 2

oil on linen 25x20cms $450AUS

Paintings by Mark Rothko particularly one in red and white were a stimulus for this work. Nan’s bedroom at Merri Merri glowed red in the afternoon light. Wispy curtains of red and white gave layers of colour to the scene. Sharp horizontal lines echoed Rothko’s layers of colour.

Jennifer the wedding dress is exquisitly painted. The photo doesnt show the expressive brushmarks giving that unmistakable satin sheen. All the gesture that I am interested in getting into my own work is here in this little glowing painting. Even the picture painted in the left side is suggested so lightly. I want to focus on it and see it closer. Tantalising. It is a painting about hope and anticipation.
